GM Boris Gulko

April 14, 2008

Boris Frantsevich Gulko was born in Erfurt, East Germany on February 9, 1947. He went to The Soviet Union and became an International Master in 1975, and a Grandmaster in 1976, and then at the 45th USSR Championship in 1977 he was co-champion with Josif D. Dorfman.

After much trial and turmoil Mr. Gulko immigrated to the United States in 1986 during the period of glasnost. “39 is too old to start playing and training to reach the highest achievement in chess,” said Boris, “those 7 years were a serious blow for my chess career, but I don’t regret them.”

His achievements include winning the United States Championship in 1994 (at 47, the oldest entrant) and 1999. Mr. Gulko is the only player to have ever held both the American and Soviet championship titles.  Most recently, Boris became co-US Open Champion at the 2007 US Open in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. His current ratings are 2559 with FIDE and 2623 with the USCF.

Mr. Gulko is known for his strong middle game positional play and solid style- he’s not easy to beat. He is one of few players to hold a plus score against Kasparov (+3, -1 and =4). Despite this or maybe because of it, Boris has a lot of respect for Kasparov. He recommends Kasparov’s books (The Great Predecessors series and Test of Time) more highly than any others and calls them required reading for aspiring masters and grandmasters.

Even with his many trials and accomplishments as a grandmaster and activist leader, Mr. Gulko has managed to remain friendly and modest. He has a smile for everyone and no airs of importance. He now lives with his wife GM Anna Akhsharumova in Fairlawn, New Jersey.
