Boris Frantsevich Gulko was born in
After much
trial and turmoil Mr. Gulko immigrated to the
His
achievements include winning the United States Championship in 1994 (at 47, the
oldest entrant) and 1999. Mr. Gulko is the only player to have ever held both
the American and Soviet championship titles.
Most recently, Boris became co-US Open Champion at the 2007 US Open in
Mr. Gulko is
known for his strong middle game positional play and solid style- he’s not easy
to beat. He is one of few players to hold a plus score against Kasparov (+3, -1
and =4). Despite this or maybe because of it, Boris has a lot of respect for
Kasparov. He recommends Kasparov’s books (The
Great Predecessors series and Test
of Time) more highly than any others and calls them required reading for
aspiring masters and grandmasters.
Even with his many trials and accomplishments as a grandmaster and activist
leader, Mr. Gulko has managed to remain friendly and modest. He has a smile for
everyone and no airs of importance. He now lives with his wife GM Anna
Akhsharumova in
