Executive Board
Dumont at U.S. Amateur Team East 2002
by Francis H. Schott

The Dumont Chess Club had three entries in the 2002 U.S. Team Championship East at the Parsippany Hilton, Feb. 16-18. The Dumont Chess Mates, our "Varsity" team, was led by Andrew Kelemen and included Arthur Feuerstein, David Slatin and Frank Schott, with Mark Schwarcz as alternate. A second Dumont team, "Hit and Run," included Louis Morales, Alan McGeorge, Neil Marcus and George Mendez. The third team, "I'm a Tour Teamest", led by Club President Ron Groseibl, included Herman Drenth, Ron Cohen and Bill Bluestone.

The Tournament had 253 teams and 1150 players, one of the largest ever. It was won by the "Weera Family," led by 14-year old Hikaru Nakamura. The best New Jersey team was "Slam 2", led by veteran Steve Stoyko. Our Varsity team, scoring 4 1/2 points, was in the hunt for a trophy until the very end, Round 6, when we could only tie "75% Pure Shahade," which included the current U.S. Women's Champion Jennifer Shahade. Our other two teams scored 3 points each (50%).

Given 253 teams, it was surely some coincidence that two Dumont teams met each other in Round 4. The Kelemen team beat the Morales team 3:1. We hope to report games by Andy Kelemen and Art Feuerstein at a later date. Meanwhile, here is Board 4 from the Dumont vs. Dumont match:
